YAYOI KUSAMA – KITCHEN THEORY AND GUEST PROJECTS

Kitchen Theory worked with Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects to create the menu for a pop-up event in honour of the work of the very talented, eccentric and exciting Japanese born artist Yayoi Kusama.

After we had the pleasure of experiencing Yayoi Kusama’s mind blowing and outer-worldly exhibition in 2012 at London’s Tate Modern, the team at Kitchen Theory were looking forward to working on such a creative project; a multi-sensory 3-course experimental menu inspired by her work.

Yayoi Kusama is an artist and writer who moved to the United States in 1957. By the early 1960’s she was already an integral part of the New York avant-garde, having her works exhibited alongside the likes of Andy Warhol and George Segal and has been associated with the pop art movement.

Yayoi Kusama is most well-known for embracing the hippie culture as her works and installations have a thematic psychedelic influence with colours, repetitions and patterns.

By the late 1960’s, Kusama came to public attention when she organized a series of happenings in which naked participants were painted with brightly coloured polka dots.

The event took place on Thursday 3rd April 2014, at The Artist Dining Room part of Yinka Shonibare’s Guest Projects.
